LPNA BBQ in Los Paseos Park

Los Paseos Neighbors, you are invited:

Thursday, September 27th

Los Paseos Neighborhood Association Hosts

BBQ in Los Paseos Park

5:30 to 7:00 pm (or however long people want to stay)

We will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers in the park to thank you and your families for your help and support. We’ve accomplished a lot in the past year:  new trees and benches in the park, Fibar for the playground and painting the restrooms, another outstanding National Night Out in August, a Dumpster Day, clothing collection for the homeless, and special meetings to discuss homelessness issues and solutions, and the impact of High Speed Rail.

This is a fun social event, but it will also be an opportunity to show you what we’ve done in the park and talk about our future the plans. We will also invite our friends in the Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department and D2 Office to thank them for all their assistance.

Please mark your calendars for September 27th, and we hope to see you there!

RSVP is not strictly required, but a tentative headcount will help with our planning and purchasing. Please reply to treasurer@lospaseosneighbors.com.

Funding for this event is provided by the BeautifySJ grant from the City of San Jose.

Los Paseos Neighborhood Association Election of Officers for 2019

The entire Board of Officers of LPNA comes up for election for the calendar year 2019 at the next general meeting on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at 7 pm at the Santa Teresa Library.

The nomination process is outlined in the LPNA Bylaws:

“Nominations of candidates for elected positions shall be submitted through the LPNA web site, (About / Contact Us) or in writing (including by email) to any Officer, at least 30 days prior to the meeting when the election will take place.”

Nominations will close at midnight on October 15th.

All members who attend the meeting in November may vote. All residents of the neighborhood over the age of 18 are considered to be members.

The current Officers of LPNA have expressed the intent to nominate themselves for the same positions in the election for 2019.

The elected positions and their duties are:

President:  The President prepares and publishes the agenda and presides at membership meetings and Board meetings; facilitates the activities of LPNA; exercises general powers of administration consistent with the office; appoints committee members with approval of the Board; reviews bank statements and disbursements made; and acts as the official spokesperson for LPNA.

Vice President:  The Vice-President assists the President; assumes the duties of the President in that Officer’s absence; coordinates the activities of any committees; and serves as an authorized check signer in addition to the Treasurer.

Secretary:  The Secretary keeps the minutes of general meetings and Board meetings; is responsible for correspondence at the direction of the President; and keeps records of attendance at meetings. The Secretary is also responsible for maintaining available for inspection all legally required records and documents, and those required under grants or the LPNA Bylaws.

Treasurer:  The Treasurer is held accountable for all funds; gives a financial update at least annually at a general meeting; receives, safeguards and disburses funds; keeps proper financial records; proposes budgets to the Board; and provides bank statements for review by the President. The Treasurer also manages grant applications and grant-related accountings, and files tax returns.

Member-at-Large (2):  The Members-at-Large assist the Board with responsibilities assigned by the Board or may be requested to take over responsibilities of another Officer on a temporary basis when an Officer is unavailable. One current Member-at-Large also serves as the LPNA webmaster, and the other is responsible for activities, projects, and issues related to Los Paseos Park.

LPNA is not connected with the Los Paseos Homeowners Association (HOA) or the Tulare Hill HOA. LPNA promotes community involvement and provides a forum to discuss issues relevant to the neighborhood. LPNA also sponsors social and service events and works with the City of San Jose to improve the neighborhood. No dues are required for membership.

Don’t miss our next General Meeting on August 16th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Santa Teresa Branch Library.
At this meeting, a fascinating presentation on the changing Santa Clara County!

Hope to see you at the meeting.

Our main speaker will be Don Weden, a former Santa Clara County principal planner for 34 years.  Mr. Weden will be presenting an enlightened and informative presentation on Envisioning Santa Clara County 3.0:  Growth & Change in Santa Clara County.

With Santa Clara County’s population projected to increase by roughly 300,000 people in the next 15 years, the vast majority of that growth will be accommodated within existing urban areas, bringing major changes, challenges, and opportunities. Our aging population is creating pressures for changes to automobile-dependent land use patterns, and intensifying the need for a wider array of housing and mobility choices. Weden will share his wisdom and insights in an informative, thought-provoking, and entertaining presentation about change, growth, and planning as South Bay residents prepare for Santa Clara County, version 3.0.

We will also get an update on parks, crime and D2 Office.

Thanks also to all our community groups and vendors who participated by hosting an information table, and to all our Fire, Police, CHP and Sheriff’s officers who were there mingling with our neighbors and showing off their cool cars/trucks and equipment.  And finally, thanks to our sponsors who helped with the costs to put on this great event:

High Speed Rail Community Update

Join Los Paseos Neighborhood Association for a community update on High Speed Rail. With the Draft 2018 Business Plan recently released, changes have been proposed for the entire alignment including the Monterey Corridor..

High Speed Rail Authority has proposed a new blended alignment for the entire length of San Jose in conjunction with expanded Caltrain service to Gilroy (similar to the blended system between San Francisco and Diridon). The City of San Jose Dept of Transportation has proposed two City-Generated Options (CGO) for the corridor instead of the blended system.

High Speed Rail Authority, Caltrain and San Jose Dept of Transportation will be presenting information on these various new alignments. Come find out how these proposed changes would impact the Monterey Corridor.

District 2 Housing Town Hall Recap

Thought I would share the D2 office email that went out to subscribers regarding the Housing Town Hall meeting held on May 24, 2018 at the Southside Community Center addressing the following:

Santa Clara County is changing. Why?
  • Santa Clara County is projected to add 300,000 people (the equivalent of two Sunnyvales) over the next 10-15 years
  • Two-thirds of the population growth will come from people ages 65 and older – because people are living longer
  • Santa Clara County is becoming more urban to keep up with the demand of the population
  • We need to act urgently to prepare for our rapidly increasing and aging population

We must plan our City not for what we see now, but for the future

  • Rental rights and recent changes for tenants and landlords in San Jose
  • Rent Stabilization Program
  • Mobilehome Rent Ordinance
  • Apartment Rent Ordinance
  • Tenant Protection Ordinance
  • Ellis Act Ordinance

The Facebook live videocast of the meeting is available here.

The PowerPoint presentation entitled “Housing Department Know Your Rights” is available from the San Jose City website document library.

If you want to receive the D2 email directly, sign up on their Constant Contact mailing list. This link is subject to change, but can always be located on the official District 2 website on the City of San Jose site.
