Quarterly Meeting 8/16

Don’t miss our next General Meeting on August 16th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Santa Teresa Branch Library.
At this meeting, a fascinating presentation on the changing Santa Clara County!

Hope to see you at the meeting.

Our main speaker will be Don Weden, a former Santa Clara County principal planner for 34 years.  Mr. Weden will be presenting an enlightened and informative presentation on Envisioning Santa Clara County 3.0:  Growth & Change in Santa Clara County.

With Santa Clara County’s population projected to increase by roughly 300,000 people in the next 15 years, the vast majority of that growth will be accommodated within existing urban areas, bringing major changes, challenges, and opportunities. Our aging population is creating pressures for changes to automobile-dependent land use patterns, and intensifying the need for a wider array of housing and mobility choices. Weden will share his wisdom and insights in an informative, thought-provoking, and entertaining presentation about change, growth, and planning as South Bay residents prepare for Santa Clara County, version 3.0.

We will also get an update on parks, crime and D2 Office.

For those unable to attend the our meeting, please feel free to view the recorded session below. Still ironing out the bugs to the process, and definitely need to remember to detach the monitoring headset when stepping away from the camera, or else everything tends to follow you around, literally. 😀 So apologies for that mishap, but otherwise, the recording is presentable. The audio was not cleanly processed as I like, but due to time constraints to make this information available prior to the 12/12 City Council meeting, it will have to do.

Phone Scams

Recently, in newscasts and Internet reports, a new scam surfaced with either a recorded “robo-call” or a human attempting to get you to answer a question with “Yes”. The caller claims to represent a business entity you may or may not be familiar with, and proceeds to ask something simple, such as:

  • Can you hear me clearly?
  • Are you the homeowner?
  • Are you over 18?
  • Are you the head of the household?
  • Do you pay the bills?
  • Do you own a computer?

It can be a myriad of questions, that the unsuspecting public might engage out of good manners. That is the hook. Most people practice good manners, or social small talk responses figuring there is no harm. The problem is the scammers are recording your voice saying “Yes” and then use that as consent to sign you up for other services or products. Later, they demand payment and use the recorded answer to confirm the purchase.

I received one of these calls today, and I was lucky enough to have read about this scam weeks prior. I did not exercise good manners. I simply hung up. If you get a call where the lead off is a question seeking a “Yes” response, DO NOT answer! The FTC and law enforcement recommend simply hanging up. Avoid providing any responses that can be construed as consent, e.g. “Yes”, “OK”, “affirmative”, “sure”.

Given it is tax season, also be on the look out for scammers claiming to represent Social Security or the IRS, demanding payment of money or face jail time. Most government agencies conduct business by written US mail, and NOT by phone. Hang up on these types of calls, too.

Free Wood Chip Mulch

A company called Chip Drop connects people with local tree companies who are willing to drop off whole truck loads of wood chip mulch for free. It’s a win win solution allowing tree companies to bypass hauling their trimmings to the waste/recycling centers for disposal and having to pay drop off fees, while you, the homeowner, do not have shell out big bucks for wood chips. Several non-profits in the area that require gardening employ these green techniques. Here is your chance to employ these similar techniques for yard projects around your home.

Help yourself.
Help local businesses.
Help the environment.
